I'm looking for more pictures of snakes.

If you have any pictures of your snake that you'd like to share, please email or PM me. Any accepted pictures will be posted on boatips page for that specific snake or in the photo gallery.

Hey Ranger,

It is the camera. In the first photo particularly, he/she (haven't had it sexed yet) looks really big, but it's still an infant. It's about 40-45cm long. I haven't measured it exactly yet. Only had it for a couple of weeks. But it's a good eater, and has a cool personality ahah.

I think it's about 5-6 months old? Growing really quick! Showing signs of shedding, so will probably burst out within the next week.

lol

then the other 2 pics he just looks like a "kid"

Ya, mine i have only gotton to strike at her meal once, although i havent tried anything to get her to keep doing this, i dont mind if she doesnt stirke. I put her in a dixie cup like on scuba tims shed video and leave her with the mouse overnight and its gone.

I kinda push the mouse in her hide box to make it look like it comes into her territory and she thinks its intruding and beats that mouse up like its her last meal lol.

I do not feed frozen. Well for starters, in SA we do not get frozen feed (I have never seen it in the pet shops). What I do is stun the mouse (pick it up by it's tail and flick it behind the head), depending on how hard you flick it the mouse still kicks it's legs. The snake goes for the movement so no more close coals. The only problem is if the snake takes to long the mouse will wake up and bite the snake, it is a risk I took and it bite my snake, the snake did not know what to do and that was the first time she rapped properly so now I gust chuck in the mouse

Thanks
Its a custom built cage. I am trying to find more things to put in there but I'm not going to spend 20 bucks on a little log.
Its a great cage other then its hard to heat, but the platform in the back makes a great basking spot. What you can't see in the picture is the 3 lights at the top.

I have to ask. You got green tree pythons, emerald tree boas, and Amazons.
All out there, not that you have all three types. But anyways, which ones are the tamest, or at least easier to care for.
I been wanting one for awhile now but I want the easier of the 3. What I remember about the Amazons they were really difficult. I think the line was "Buy a snake hook".

If your using IE 7 of firefox, just open a new TAB...one for here and one for photobucket and just click between them.

If your using IE6 you will need to open IE twice..one here and one in Photobucket.

Switch between the 2 using the ALT+TAB keys.

If your still having trouble let me know and I'll see if I can help further.

raptor667
11-20-2007, 09:51 AM
"H-Lav-Avery Question What does that mean"

right...this was fun to lookup...and i am joking...lol

H....probabley means one of the snakes parents was Het normal...ie a normal cornsnake

LAV...short for :- Lavender Corn Snakes contain a light pink background with darker purple gray markings and burgundy eyes or lavender gray blotches on an orangish background. Variation with this same genetic strain are arguably called: mocha, cocoa, and chocolate.

Motley: exhibiting a line of light colored spots or fused blotches

Still it is an unusual and pretty Corn snake...

Hope that helps

well the vet gave her a shot of oxytocin hoping it would kick her into labor but nothing yet and that was monday :( shes still eating like a cow (she ate all the food i had for her already this week) but is clearly very uncomfortable. that was our last ditch effort, but she didnt give me a time frame all she really said was if she strains but doesnt lay them or if she stops eating. i guess i'll give it a couple more days before i call her but it looks like its gonna be surgery  she has been burrrowing into my bed so i was hoping that was an indication but nothin.

thanks! (to you AND your son)... not sure on age, I've owned her for almost a year, and I'm guessing she was at least a year & a half when I got her... so I'd say at least two.. I know she was neglected. A friend of the guy I bought her from said she'd go months without being fed. The guy was afraid to handle her, I could tell. At about 8' I think she's undersized. I like to think I'm her hero. She's quite a sweetie. She seems to love being handled.

I'm surprised how well some turn out. Everybody likes the one going up the stairs.. I should have taken more when she got all the way to the door. Personally I swear by my Fuji s5500, brilliant camera. Only 4mp but the results speak for themselves.

I am a printing machinist by trade and our printing plates are all now digital. My wife was a plate maker and we met within the trade way back when plates were done with film.

Digital is a whole new learning curb, strange things happen with digital, in fact, one of the last jobs that we printed was a real estate brochure (which is what we specialize in, real estate jobs) and one of the guys overlooked the fact that he just printed 25,000 copy's of a house that had a swimming pool with red water instead of blue.

For todays technology (computers), digital cameras seem like a must. I got the scanner but you lose resolution when you scan a picture in, not to mention since it uses a light some of your colors may come out lighter or darker then the original picture.

This week since I am off of work I will be working on a new rack for hatchlings, hopefully get some pictures posted when I get done with it.

I read online somewhere that digital can't come close to 35 mm resolution (to support what raptor was saying).. but for the non-professional, like myself, it sure makes it easier to take and work with some pretty good shots.. you don't waste film on bad shots, you can get digital photo printers that print lab-quality pics, you can 'photoshop' or adjust pics... they've also got the higher-end SLR digital cameras with interchangable lenses & the like.. but that's a little advanced for me.. I'm still learning the features and capabilities of my Cybershot. (thank goodness for the 'auto' selections on the settings menus) lol. For online sharing, though, seems like a mid-range digital would be a good idea even for a pro.
oh.. nice pics! that's a great enclosure, too..

Very nice Piccy's, your snake sure has a fancy house...with wallpaper too.
:)

Quick note on scanners, always make sure you put the image to the top of the scanner rather than the bottom....the reason for this....the read head on your scanner is fixed at the top, the bit that lights up and travels along your scanner is just a light and a mirror....so the closer to the top the better.

Sorry sometimes the ' IT tech ' head slips on over the ' snake loving ' one....lol

On the subject of taking pictures of your snakes what colour do you find works best for a background....I know a lot of pro photographers use black...but this seems to distort the colours of the snake...??????

tmmpin
12-22-2007, 12:46 PM
Some of the best pictures of snakes that I have seen were done on a dark blue. It didn't look like it took anything from the snake's color and didn't add any shadows that weren't suppose to be there, like you would see on a white surface when using a flash. Not to mention some of the flashback you get from a reflective surface.

One question......have had your snake sexed?????

ssgdukes
01-25-2008, 07:43 PM
No I haven't had him offically sexed but the pet shop said that he is a boy. I want to have him sexed but I just can't bare the thought of having someone either popping him or sticking rods down his vent.......ouch

Anyway thanks and I will try to post some better pictures once I pry the camera from my wife.

raptor667
01-26-2008, 12:11 AM
only asked about the sex cause your snake has a small tail...one of the ways you can get a clue to a snakes sex is the tail length. Long tail---male snake. short tail -- female snake....

It's just speculation as there is only 1 way to be sure and as you said it doesn't sound fun.....lol

ssgdukes
01-26-2008, 05:42 AM
Thats a good point....he does have a short tail. Oh well I guess one of these days I will get him sexed so I can find out for sure. Well as I promised here are some more pictures of Big Hurt.

Me and Hurt at bath time.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee292/ssgdukes77/100_0128.jpg

Looks like a good setup for him though.
Might want to look into a better thermometer and hygrometer though, does little round ones aren't very accurate.
You can run buy wal-mart and pick up a digital that tells both for a little over 10 bucks. It might not say "reptile" on it but in this hobby its cheaper to go outside the box sometimes.

Or........plug a Micro USB cable into your PC and into your Camera ( almost all cameras do have them...hope yours has ). I'm very careful about that.. 8) when I would feed her rats (2-3) I'd have them in an open container outside the cage door.. after she'd finish one she would strike repeatedly at me (good thing the cage door was between us  )... smelling the rats + my movements triggered strikes.. now I make sure she's away from where I put the rat when I present it, then, if she doesn't just take it on her own, I wiggle it with the tongs and that's all it takes.. then I WASH HANDS and don't handle her for about a week.. 8)

Saffron looks like shes smiling in that top pic Doug. :D
she does! 8) a lot of people say that when I show them pictures.. must just be her natural person- er- snakeality showing through... (ok.. that was pretty corny.. )

Doug.... you said you give saffron once a week and you dont handle her for a week afterwards. Am I screwing up again cuz we handle Hawn the very next day. She hasnt had any problems from it at all and every morning swhen I come down she seems to follow my every move till I go to her and interact with her for a little bit.
Which brings me to my next question..... Since I cant get her out on my own right now (she is just way too big to handle with one arm) will just interacting with her in her cage help alot. She really seems to like it and I dont want her to forget my scent.

MainStick
03-11-2008, 06:50 PM
I would think any interaction is a good thing.

After large meals, I generally look for my little guy to elect to come out of his hide and explore as a sign he wants out completely.

My guy started his first few months of his life with 2 different groups of people and I get the feeling he didn't have any real interaction with the first group and was on his own with the 2nd group for 2 months before they realized they actually had a pet snake in the house. Thus he is still a very independant snake and probably always will be. All you can do is try to get them comfortable.

Or you can hire Christy to fly in and put your snake through her "become a Cat - Obedience training" :D

dwg1211

as a general rule, I've always heard not to handle them for a day or two after feeding to avoid regurgitation.. to let those digestive enzymes do there thing and 'mushify' (new word?) their meal... 8) since switching to rabbits ('jumbos' weren't my first choice, but they made up the majority of the 'assortment' pack I ordered  ) I give her extra time... she seems to still enjoy daily visits, though.. she'll stay coiled up, but raise her head and come to the side of the tank as if to say, 'hi!'.. after about 4-5 days the lump is gone and I'll handle her gently.. I think any interaction will help avoid them reverting to 'untame'.. as long as they're accustomed to contact they'll be less likely to be spooked by being approached... the bigger mine gets, the less I like the idea of 'spooking' her.. 8)

Roy
03-12-2008, 10:29 AM
I had no problem with handling after a feed, but only if I need to and only if I am gentle. It would be a bit like if we were picked up by the belly after a huge meal.:(

Thom

Thats a real good thiung to hear. I fed her Mon late afternoon and yesterday afternoon when I was doing the daily routine of changing her water and just interacting with her she managed to climb up through the top of her cage and up and around me. all on her own. She sat on my shoulder (which was a little painful but well worth the experience) for about an hour. It wa like she knew I was hurt and she just wanted to be near me.
smiling I think my little girl is getting a crush on me. ( no pun intended)
:D
Anyone else ever have your snake respond to you like that?

Monty my first snake, whenever I clean up his enclosure he will wrap around my arm and just hang there while I clean it. Of course he doesn't stay there to long, he usually decides he wants to explore what my arm is attached to.

Izzie - thankyou :D . The trick to getting clear pics of her pulling tongues is a fast shutter speed and lots a shots, you may only get one out of twenty thats any good...I took 25 pics in total and those were the 4 best .... oh and a good macro setting on your camera is a must have.

Yep she will be 2 in May...doesn't feel like I've had her for that long though, good things have a way of distorting time.

I couldnt leave her in it though cuz there isnt any glass in it yet. Thats what I'm finishing today. That should tell you how much she likes it though. very cool, Roy.. never knew that.. learn something new everyday. 8)

I was just using it as 'aha!' ..lol here's a common definition (the only one I knew before now): expressing triumph: used to express delight on finding, discovering, or solving something, or on finally succeeding in doing something
I rolled back the rug and eureka - there it was!

[Early 17th century. < Greek heurēka "I have found (it)" < heuriskein "to find," supposedly exclaimed by Archimedes when he discovered the principle of water displacement]

now that I know it's an Aussie word, I'm gonna start saying it with an Australian accent... like 'croykie' (for 'crikey').. how 'bout this: 'YOURAIKA!' (did I sound like Croc' Dundee?? :) )

Ok now that we are on the subject of shedding again...... Hawns eyes have been cloudy for about 4 days now and she has been a bit on the skitish side, so I know she is getting ready but how long does it usually take before she will actually shed? I cant wait to see how bright and brillant her color is going to get after she sheds. By the way she sure hasnt lost her appetite though. When she ate on Tues it was one of the biggest rats I have ever seen but she gobbled it down and seemed to look at me like " ok dad I ate my dinner now wheres dessert? lol
When I got her I thought she was eatting every other week. I found out yesterday that she was actually only eating about once every third or fourth week. The people my sister in law got her from said if they fed her anymore often then that, that it wasnt good for her.
I now feed her once a week and she has no prob at all eating dead prey now.
Also I was wondering.... ok this will show my ignorence....
Do snakes grow and then shed the skin or is it when they shed that they grow?
I have had Hwan for going on 2 months now and she is the exact same length she was when I got her. She hasnt shed since I got her but she has gotten bigger around and gained about 5 pounds.

tmmpin
03-20-2008, 01:30 PM
I don't know either. I would think they grow and stretch their skin out and that is the reason for the shed. I do know they tend to shed more if something isn't right, like mites.
Probably like a pair of jeans, when they start becoming faded and stained, a few holes in the legs, its time to get a new pair.

Thom
03-20-2008, 03:50 PM
If its the case that she isnt shedding cuz she is healkthy then I have one helll of a healthy snake. lol
I was looking at her eyes today and they dont look cloudy at all but he hasnt shed yet either. Her disposition today is really good too. I was cleaning her "Condo" a little bit ago and she cmae right up to me and was wanting to climb on my artm and just seemed to want some overall attention. So Im guessing the mood before was cuz she had just eaten. I just cant wait till she sheds again.

Roy
03-21-2008, 01:00 AM
Yeah, mine also take a week or more after the cloudy eyes before they shed. During winter they hardly shed at all when they are in they're semi-hibernation stage, but they hardly grow during that time.

:D thanks!!! she is Great ... funny... and looney too!! although i must admit that i didnt understand the word bewdy... (translation please).. trust me, i did search for it on dictionary.com!...

the funny story about mixing her type is because when my guy called me and asked me if i apreciate a snake as a gift for my 30th birthday... i automatically agreed... then he started trying to describe the snakes infront of him for me to choose!!...
meanwhile i browsed the net... and have actually listened to Gary's advise on his section of getting the right snake... called my guy and screamed BALL PYTHON!!! get me a BALL PYTHON... this is the one for beginners!!!...

so here i am with a "Ball Python" at home.... got bitten once infact... which made me a little bit scared of her.. leading me to go to the pet-store and ask the man there to let me hold his snakes, and teach me how to pick her up, and overcome my fear..

and i found one just like wisey... and discovered that most of the time my guy seems that he doesnt really hear me when i speak to him!!!!
he got me a King Snake....

now she approachs me behind the glass when i talk to her... and let me caress her while she stand still on the bottom of her cage.. hopefully i will pick it up tonight....

That one I got lucky with, a friend of mine had it and decided it was too big. She sold it to me dirt cheap.
To build something like that probably cost around 300 dollars.

I built a snake rack over the weekend, I will try to post some pictures of it up as soon as I get time to take them.
Also hopefully will be posting some pictures of the Snake show in Indy this coming weekend.

Well, I've got people who would be able to build that for way cheaper. Maybe even as a birthday or Christmas present ...... Hmmm ....

But I can't get it until after college anyway when I move out >w<

Hmmm ... Snake show ... That's very interesting O.o What's it like? Or, well, I can imagine it'd be like a Chicken Show with a lot less noise and a lot less mess .... >.> I used to take Agriscience D= Leave me be! I like chickens ;.;

One that size, all the wood and everything adds up fast. The plexi-glass isn't cheap either.
The rack I just got done building cost me around 80 dollars so far. I still got to add the flexwatt heat tape to it and paint it. Some latches on the front so the tubs can't slide out. When it is all said and done it should run roughly 120 bucks.
With the price of wood and screws the price goes up fast.

I think just about everyone has seen the pics of Hawn's "condo".
It took me a little over a month to build and it cost me roughly 350.00 in materials. I dont really have it totally done yet and probably wont for anothe month or so because the doc told me I had to quit using the arm for awhile but when its all done I would say the cost to buy mine would be about $2500.00. Now the build time would normally be about 3 days but give me a break its tough to work with one arm tied behind your back!. ok ok ok maybe not tied behind my back but close! lol

I do HVAC for a living.. we have a sheet metal shop... you all just gave me a good idea for building a future enclosure.. I could make a giant box out of 24 guage sheet metal.. I could make all of the walls and floor at work and assemble everything at home.. with something like that, I could always break it back down and put it back together to move it or whatever.. I could rivet hinges for a plexiglass front... it would be moisture proof, retain heat, look great, and, above all, be escape proof... she never really tries, but just in case.. it wouldn't cost me much at all.. my boss can sell me about 3-4 sheets of 4'x8' metal, and I can use the break and the pittsburg machine to form all of the locks and joints.. like a giant piece of duct. 8)

That's actually a pretty good idea O.o

I'd like to construct something like a small jungle gym or hamster cage kind of thing ...

And like I said before, I could get someone to build it for me for Christmas or my birthday. You just don't know the connections I have D=

Annnnnd ... My step-dad works part-time in construction, so the wood would be no problem ;o Just have to get the glass :D

My only concern of the sheet metal cage would be heating. Metal seems to transfer heat real well. I would think it might end of with hot spots sort of like a heat rock.
I don't know a lot about metal but that is just what I am thinking. I would think that everything else would be alright though, metal walls and roof.

Hmmm .... O.o I'm sure there's a metal you could keep cool ....

I could ask my ag teacher, anyway .... I have to ask him for duck eggs anyway -.-' Don't ask about that.

eh... the metal is not going to collect that much heat... besides, there'll be a substrate..

I suppose if a person used carpet (like Thom does). I know the aspen I use in mine, my balls like to dig in it.
Looking at Thoms condo he built I got a feeling he has a pretty good plan if he is even considering it.
