Breeding Red-Tail Boas
Please could someone give me basic advice on the steps to follow when considering breeding my red-tails. Alternatively please direct me to a reliable site. Some of the stuff i have read on the web appears to be hugely contradictory and some of it written by people who should not breed mice let alone snakes.

I have found one book that had the perfect description of breeding boas in it, but can't remember the name or author. Don't listen to anyone who tells you you need to season or cool down your boas before breeding them. That can do more harm than good. South America really doesn't have a big "cool" season, so it is not in their nature. They're really easy though. You can put a ready male and female together and most of the time they'll do the deed themselves. They don't lay eggs, so all you have to do is keep the female at a nice, warm incubation temp. You might wanna look up the temps to keep her at, because I don't remember and my memory is shooting out more and more because my pain mess are kicking in, so I'll let someone else take over.

Thanks thats the best advice i have received anywhere. The whole seasonal thing and cooling etc made no real sense as the habitat they come from is either hot and wet or very hot and very wet. If you remember the name of that book please let me know. Slowly on the meds now! Just now you will be feeding those 2 new little herps pinkies!

Lmao! I think it'll be a while yet before they start eating pinkies ;P

I can tell you I found the book at PetSmart, which of all places surprised me. I don't know if you have PetSmart there or not, but it is without a doubt the WORST chain pet store to go to for information. Biggest idiots I've ever seen. I wonder sometimes if they go out of their way to hire idiots.

No we dont have Petsmart but your description sounds like the average SA pet store. I will check the online book stores even if i have to order from overseas.

I THINK it might have been this one ...

It looks familiar to me, but I'm not sure

Thanks i will give it a bash and see if they can help me.

Alright. Just remember, if it says anything about cycling, hibernating, cooling down your boas, it's not the right book and don't listen to it.

I don't know but I sweat like bullets and get "very hot and wet" around the wife...but I don't think that's what snakes do...:D

But out of curiousity, how do you know if the "deed" has been done? Is there certain behavior?

I bought my 2nd Boa from someone local who just birthed snakes. I saw the female about 6 ft long and all. She was a beauty! Now this person I know put the snakes first because she wouldn't allow me to take one of the hatchlings because this one did not eat yet. Although they all did shed, all but one was not eating.

I didn't have a problem buying one for $50. She was watching her brother's boa and she was pissed at him because this boa was FAT! I saw it. So she knew what the heck she was doing with her snake.

And how long is gestation?

lovesnuffles 09-29-2011 07:04 PM

You'll know if they did the deed by the female's behaviour. She'll have a football sized bulge in her tail until she sheds and then she'll start growing wider and wider with babies. I believe gestation is something like 4 or 5 months ... I can't remember ...
