Hi Everyone!
Sorry I don't get on often; I'm really busy with school, and it's going to be twice as bad now that the semester is coming to an end and I have finals and term papers. While I am going to be taking nothing but awesome classes next semester, I'm going to have a much heavier work load, but it'll be worth it.

The only bit of news I have is I got a crested gecko! I never really was one much for cresties, but this little guy is possibly the cutest thing in the world. I'll have to take a picture of him (I'm assuming he's a male--he's too young to know for sure) soon.

I know that some people here keep cresties, so what are your set-ups like? I've read a ton of care sheets, but I just want to know what works for everyone.

I hope everyone is doing well and had a great Thanksgiving!

DodoBird27 11-29-2011 04:48 AM

Yay, a crestie! I enjoy cresties, but they seem fragile. I've had 5, but only 2 are currently alive...but most of those deaths weren't my fault, maybe all of them weren't.
He/She have a name yet? Pics, hurry!:p

My set ups are pretty basic. For my first gecko I played around with various substrates, but she kept trying to eat them so I settled on paper towel. Much easier to use and much less of a choking/impaction hazard. As for cage decoration, I just go with a piece of wood and/or cork bark for climbing and a bunch of plastic vines and leaves to stick to the walls. I sometimes even stick in small hides because my a few of my geckos have tended to prefer burrowing or sleeping on the ground rather than in the plants. Your lil dude sounds little, so he probably only needs a faunarium or small tank.

Any news on how Sebastian is doing?

frankywdmn 11-29-2011 04:58 AM

He has a name; I decided on Gilbert. I might call him Gilby for short. If he turns out to be a she, I'll have to come up with something else though.

Right now I've him in a Kritter Keeper with a few fake plants and vines; he is also on paper towels. I think I may keep it that way, at least until I get him a bigger cage.

The last I heard about Sebastian was he got out of his outside cage, and they still haven't found him. I really hate that he got away; the people I gave him to have other large lizards and they seemed like the right choice--I saw some of their set ups, and they were well maintained--but the guy didn't listen to me and take the necessary precaustions: i.e., putting a liner under the cage so Sebastian couldn't dig his way out. I hope they find him, but I doubt they will.

DBG 11-29-2011 05:35 AM

Don't know a thing abotu cresties, only beardies. ;)

Do you mind telling me who Sebastian is? I'm sorry to hear he got away. That's not good. :(

frankywdmn 11-29-2011 05:39 AM

Yeah, Sebastian (Sea Bass) was my Argentine tegu; I have pictures of him on my profile page if you wanna check him out.

DodoBird27 11-29-2011 06:31 AM

Oh no! Awh, I'm sorry to hear that Franky.:( I hope he's okay.

Oh, duh, the name was in your signature xD Oops. Anyway, it's an adorable name. And the nickname Gilby is just ridiculously cute! Love it :D

frankywdmn 11-29-2011 06:32 AM

Thanks Dodo!

lovesnuffles 11-29-2011 06:38 AM

Paper towels are best for Crestie substrate, so I'd keep it if I were you. Sounds like a good set up, just up him to a 10 gallon once he gets bigger.

Sorry to hear about Sebastian :(

frankywdmn 11-29-2011 07:04 AM

Yeah, it ****s; I just can't believe how the guy didn't observe the fact that a borrowing lizard will borrow.

lovesnuffles 11-29-2011 07:38 AM

Some people don't have any common sense D:

frankywdmn 11-29-2011 07:39 AM

I forgot to ask: do you guys use any type of heat source for cresties? I've got a heat mat attached to the side of Gilby's enclosure. I know that the optimal temps for cresties are between 72 and 78, and they can tolerate drops into the 60's and increases up to 80. The only reason I use one is my room is usually a bit cooler than the rest of the house, which is at 73.

Thom 11-29-2011 11:16 AM

Hey Franky....
No worries. If Gilbert turns out to be a female just change the name from gilbert to Gilberta.

lovesnuffles 11-29-2011 07:16 PM

I never used anything. A UVB light is recommended though. It should provide enough heat to keep him warm even in the coldest area of the house.

Here are some pictures of Gilbert, albeit horrible ones.

lovesnuffles 11-30-2011 04:03 AM

It's hard to tell what morph he is. Looks like a harley or flame ... It's really hard to see lol. But he's cute!!

frankywdmn 11-30-2011 04:07 AM

Maybe one day I'll have a better camera in my possession; until then, the iphone will have to suffice.:/

I don't know what kind of morph he is either; I simply chose him based on his cuteness.

DodoBird27 11-30-2011 04:34 AM

Aww, he's adorable! :D I think he looks flameish too, but it's hard to say now. His colors will probably develop a lot over the next few months.

As for lighting, I've never used it for heat. I had a UV light for one of the geckos once but after I switched up the tanks there was no place for it. It's a good thing to have though if you have the money for it. But it's not required.

frankywdmn 11-30-2011 04:37 AM

I love him! He's always hopping around, ALWAYS.

WiccanWolf88 12-02-2011 07:40 PM

Good to see you back franky! And he is a cutie pie!:D

frankywdmn 12-02-2011 09:09 PM

Thank you!!

Greg Nel 12-03-2011 04:37 PM

He is stunning! Never was overly drawn to geckos etc but he has pricked my interest big time. How difficult are they to care for?

frankywdmn 12-04-2011 02:01 AM

Fairly easy. They don't require a big set up or high temps: just keep the humidity up, have vines and leaves in the enclosure, and feed them Repashy crested gecko food and crickets

NASAAN101 12-04-2011 02:38 AM

Just don't let him jump on your face :) !!!

frankywdmn 12-04-2011 04:18 AM

He already has!!

buckwheatpw 12-05-2011 08:39 PM

That's to bad about Seabass.......But I still have Sabina safe and sound :D! She's very blue at the moment so when she sheds I'll get some pictures of her. She's getting a small rat every 2 weeks so she's put on some size.

frankywdmn 12-05-2011 09:31 PM

Wow! I would love to see some pictures of her; I was wondering when she would finally hit a growth spurt.

DennyS 12-05-2011 09:57 PM

Hey Franky, nice to see you again!

buckwheatpw 12-06-2011 01:38 AM

Denny are you going to make the move to bama? Me and probably Franky would like to see you here!

frankywdmn 12-06-2011 02:00 PM

We have a reptile show every month... that alone is enticing enough.

DBG 12-06-2011 07:40 PM

Reptile show every month? I'm Jealous! Now if it wasn't so humid down ther eI'd be there in a jiffy! :D

frankywdmn 12-06-2011 09:03 PM

Yeah, I hate the humidity and the heat. I really want to move--at least for a while. I hope I get into a grad school somewhere up North.

lovesnuffles 12-07-2011 05:10 AM

We just started having reptile shows every month too :D It's pretty awesome

DBG 12-07-2011 05:28 AM

The humidity doesn't bother me. I've lived on the East Coast before. It's the wifey that has issues.. :(

frankywdmn 12-07-2011 02:27 PM

Be careful Snuffles; you might end up with more than you can handle (as if you don't know that)!

lovesnuffles 12-07-2011 08:38 PM

LOL! Actually, the past two reptile shows I went to, I didn't buy a thing! So ha!! And at the next one I'm going to, I'm gonna actually be a vendor, so :P

frankywdmn 12-07-2011 11:02 PM

That's cool! When and where is it? I might try to go.

lovesnuffles 12-08-2011 10:54 PM

I'm not sure ... It'll probably be next month, but I've gotta see. Gotta ask the producer of the show all the details.

frankywdmn 12-08-2011 11:04 PM

I've got ya. Just let me know!

lovesnuffles 12-09-2011 05:04 AM

I will! It'll be in Hammond, so it's not a far drive from your dad's. 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic :3
