Unhappy RI?

so i'm 99% sure kali has a respiratory infection. for a while she's exhaled loudly and would open her mouth from time to time but in the past few days every breath she takes has been like a long wheeze and she's keeping her mouth slightly open at all times and i noticed last night that she was foaming in her mouth. i made an appointment at the closest vet to me which is at the vet school at a university. they treat reptiles there but for "special pets" it's $120 just to see them + whatever antibiotics i'm going to need. i hope they can bill me but i'm pretty concerned and bummed out. i don't have a car so i can't try to find a cheaper place when i can go 13 blocks down the street.

Aww that ****s, I hope she gets better. That sure sounds like a respiratory infection. I think Baytril is usually prescribed for RI, that's what I got at least, and it isn't too expensive.

how soon did you see results? what was the dosage like? aside from this she's really healthy and strong...eats and poops regularly and all that, no weight loss.

fingers crossed all goes well.

Probably preaching to the choir now but have you moved Kali's viv away from your other snakes....not something to have them pass on to each other.

This was a few years ago so I don't remember the dosage, sorry. I just remember that giving injections was difficult. Had to get my dad to hold PJ down because he was so squirmy and strong, and he was only a young Ball Python! I never did see results though. After two vials of Baytril I gave up. He still makes noises when he breathes. All I can figure is that he must have been incorrectly diagnosed. Maybe he was just born that way, I did buy him from a pretty crappy reptile shop (but of course, I didn't know that at the time).

alright, so i brought her in and the staff was great, attentive, and thorough. after observing her and everything they gave me a list of suggested procedures...totalling well over $1000. i had to withdraw from my savings just to afford the visit so i told them all of those options were completely out of the question so let's hope for the obvious and treat it accordingly. they gave me antibiotics (forgot which one) that i have to inject every 3 days for the next 20 days. they even supervised me giving the first injection. so i boosted the temperature in her enclosure and i'm supervising her even more than usual. my other snake is still in the same room but on a different shelf across the room. i wash my hands and use hand sanitizer thoroughly before and after holding either of them.

Wow I'm pretty sure my vet only charged me like $180 for the exam and Baytril. It wasn't actually a reptile vet though...I think it was a feline vet who happened to have some experience with herps and that was as close as I could get.

yeah, this vet actually had a special species department that handles reptiles and birds. it was $120 for the visit plus about $26 for the meds. not too bad.
