Default Defensive

So I took my hog island out tonight to clean up his mess he made overnight and add some fake plants for him to play in and he wouldnt stay still with me holding him, so I put him in a box that apparently he didnt care for and became very defensive and hissing when I went to get him out. Even striking at me

My question is: what is the best way to get him to calm down and relax before attempting to pick him back up and typically how long until they snap out of it?

Ive been hit before (not by him) I know it doesnt hurt and not looking forward to another one, but mainly dont want to hurt him, his chompers or have him start practicing for his pilot license

Ron

I had the same thing happen to me when Serge was a hatchling. I think snakes easily feel vulnerable. Ruby was freaked out for days when I put her in the new enclosure. I would suggest having a hide box or something they are familiar with that you can relocate while cleaning out their enclosure. I would let mine go for a wander around in the lounge room while I cleaned mine.

P.S. A little love bite is OK now and then.

I don't even put Brandy in a box when transporting her, because I know if I do, she'll be one pissy snake for the rest of .... forever!! So ((and as mad as some people may get at this)), if I don't have a pillow case to put her in, I just hold her around my neck when I have to take her somewhere. She curls up on the headrest of the seat and is a perfectly happy snake then.

But putting a towel or something over his head before reaching in and grabbing him will help that. It makes him feel less stressed.

Thanks and copy that...no boxes!

I have a bag that I would normally use but a box was closer
What's the psychy between the two?

After he uncoiled and chilled out I picked him up and he just looked at me to say whats the big deal buddy; hi how are you! Just like jekyl and hyde

OK, my two cents... I also will put my snake around my neck while I clean but not if they were pissy or hissy to begin with...I don't want a facial bite! If they are in a strike pose I will use the"stop sign" method of laying my hand on the snakes head! The snake will see the flat large heat source and will 95% of the time lower it's head. Lay your hand on the head for several seconds then immediately pick up the snake. You should have a spare 28-32 qt tub just for holding while you clean an enclosure!!

Btw Roy he got you good!
Container for this container for that; my rooms going to be filled with empty containers! Lol actually if I wasn't so lazy I would have cleaned out his feeding container, but I like the scent in there...as soon as I place him in there he's on a mission! He wasn't pissy till I opened the box and Denny you'll have to show me the hand on the head some time lol

So are you saying that once his up he will feel safe again and most likely won't try and tag me again?
